the transition

yesterday i was in guatemala. today i'm in the mountains of colorado. the temperature difference is about 60 degrees if not more.
two days ago i was in nicaragua, my last couple days were hectic with traveling back to guatemala to catch my flight. we left san juan del sur and headed to granada, a cool colonial city near lago de nicaragua. we hung out there the night, i managed to pick up some presents for two people, re-packed our bags so i could bring things back that mateo no longer needed. the we headed for managua where i was to catch my bus to guate. we ended up going to a baseball game in managua that night. it was some sort of championship series, this night being the first game out of seven. the game moved on quite quickly until the later innings. few strikeouts and walks, many hits, more errors than the scoreboard displayed. the home team was down by a run and the crowd was getting rowdy, near the bottom of the seventh, mateo and i looked at each other and shared the same thoughts, ' i hope the home team wins ' . if not, leaving the stadium and getting back to the hostel might have been dodgy. in the bottom of the eighth, the home team hit a three run homerun and went up by two. the very next batter had a fastball at his head and the benches and bullpens cleared. there were about three or four good fights throughout the scramble. very exciting. the home team ended up winning the game and we made it home safely.
we then stayed up until 0130 and i got on my bus at 0230 to travel through four countries and arrive in guatemala city later that night, ate, slept and went to the airport at 0600 the next morning.
the transition is somewhat unexpected. i entered a previous life.
no more bean, rice, guacamole, people whistling, rush, buses, cell phones, computers, obligations, television, kindness, culture. no more expectations, people poking you on the shoulder, children asking for a c-note, hot showers, walking on trash.
i landed, awoken to another, unkind people trying to live fast, rushing, hot showers with water pressure, television, cell phones ringing, clean sheets.
the transitions were unexpected and happened in both cases. when i left the states and landed in guatemala and another when i returned. they happen slowly. i've been trying to write this post since i have returned but have found it extremely difficult to find the words to properly express what i was feeling, my new thoughts and ideas and views. i still haven't found them.
i miss central america, the lifestyle, the simplicity, the culture and experiences. i have yet to feel at home.
