Gored by Bison: Hilarious

Gored by bison: An unusual backpacker hazard

LONG BEACH, Calif. — A backpacker fell prey to one of Southern California's lesser-known hazards: being gored by an American bison on Santa Catalina Island.
Jardrec Anangos was recovering from a fractured pelvic bone, a sore back and an open wound after he was attacked Wednesday by one of the descendants of a bison herd brought over to film a silent movie in the 1920s.
"All I can say is I'm happy to be alive," he said.
Anangos, 24, of Cerritos, Calif., said he and two friends had backpacked into the island's Little Harbor to go snorkeling but saw a herd of about 15 bison blocking the path to the beach.
Anangos said he was about 20 feet away when he caught the eye of one animal.
The bison "didn't like me standing that close and charged me," he said.
He ran but "there was no real chance of me escaping," he said. "They're way faster than humans."
He was gored from behind in the upper thigh and lifted."I was pretty much on top of his head," he said.
The herd then moved away. Some nearby campers administered first aid until paramedics airlifted Anangos to the hospital.
Bob Rhein, a spokesman for the Catalina Island Conservancy, said he had not heard of a bison attacking a human in the three years he had worked for the agency, although he knows of previous bison attacks against dogs and even a horse.
"We don't like for anyone to get hurt, and we're very sorry that this happened," Rhein said. He added that the best advice for dealing with the island's roughly 200 bison is to stay away from them.

labor day laboring

it's 9:19 in the morning and i've finished mowing lawn for the second time this year. hopefully winter landscaping will sort that out and there'll be no lawn mowing next year. that's the plan anyway. it's our last 80 degree day here, then rain is predicted as per every year starting on Monday, labor day.

i'm passing up some pretty cool plans this weekend to go paddling to the coast. i'd been out there only once this year, on memorial day where we paddled around the northwestern most point in the continental US. another group is going out again but after vascillating on the thing to do, i'm opting for house wiring, basement framing, etc. not sure how much time i'll have in the future with the job scene so thought it best to keep progress on that.

a room mate is moving in this weekend. the house's first. we'll keep working and hopefully will be more by fall. would love to be working and covering mortgage and saving again for that next thing, phase 2 in the scheme to be flexible.

last weekend I was up on Orcas Island again with Scott. magic. we paddled 2o miles the first day along the northern coast then out to some islands making our way back. no whales, but plenty of sea life. here are some pics from that weekend.

what next?

as i walk aorund the house and procrastinate, i end up sitting at the computer thankful this house has such a strong soul. working on these projects solo sometimes feels like i'm trapped inside, at these times i just leave and go find something fun to do. fun these days are the trips to the hardware store getting parts. there's the lowes and home depot wars. both are ok, neither are great. it's all about the staff and their willingness to help. i'm finding that it's best just to go buy things for new project in bulk so when i walk around the house wondering what to do next i'm stared at by new building materials that need to take shape. it's like house though, lets me work on things when its ready, not when i'm ready. if i try to push a room's project too hard it throws wrong parts and misalignment my way, so then i move onto something else. likely a bit of my floundering at home construction coupled with this place and its vitality. don't read dispare into my words, rather awe and interest on how things get accomplished. there are obvious ebbs and flows to progress and forward movement. i fall back on my project management experience, which in the working world is websites and marketing. i'm so glad it lends itself to tactics i need to keep things moving. i write lists, envision projects and grossly underestimate the time it'll take me to finish something, of which i've nearly given up in predicting because of unknown details on the remodel quest. right now that list would look something like -
  • putting in pocket door in new bath
  • putting up backboard in the kitchen
  • prep for upcoming drywall in 3 rooms and an attic
  • continue rewiring attic circuit
  • finding windows that will fit upstairs
  • running ethernet cable upstairs to new computer lab
  • final preps on bedrooms for future tenants
  • fixing the used toilet and lav sink to put in the new bathroom
  • fix rain gutters and drainage before this year's wet season
  • fix holes in walls that i created during old electrical removal
  • paint (which is always the last thing i get to
  • build out cabinet shelving
  • install dishwasher and get ready for that new plumbing
while at the mercy of progress, i prepare to shut off the computer and throw a dart at the next to-do. so happy to have this summer off and learning all these fixing-up-a-house skills i'm not going to forget in the short future. i'm sure it'll lend itself to something.

travel white blood cells

a friend of mine is about to travel for a year or more
asking questions about how to book air tix that far in advance
susan is traveling now, feeling tropical hurricans, petting lizards
taking pictures and talking to people of other priorities

i'm writing about tiling a bathroom
and cleaning grout from underneath my fingernails
it's getting harder and harder to sit still in this place
stability, yes, a place to return to, have to have it
but in creating it i've had many travel temptations, a disease
each taking an aresenal of travel white blood cells to keep at bay
i've been back from traveling only 5 months
from one perspective it seems absurd, it's only been 5 months
time to go read those travel journals of complete loneliness

here was sept 2004 in India
here was London in 2003
here is today 2007

tiling bath surround

way more fun than trimming a plastic tub surround
tile adds quality, it captures a labor of love.

after about a day and a half, I have a tiled bathroom.
there's nothing hard about tiling, there's nothing fast about it either
it's a lot of mess and mortar, with drips from runs to the wet saw
there's no tape measuring, only tile marking
most valuable tool - v-notched trowel and level!

there are 4x4 tiles, 6x4, 6x6, 12x12
there's ceramic and porcelain tiles, matte and gloss finishes
different colors and qualities with a wide price range
this being on the cheaper end, was about $3/sq ft
this tub surround cost about $300.

perfection has no place when you are tiling
only if you are willing to live with it.

so far, plumbing and roofing .... sucks
electrical and tiling... quite fun.
sheetrock and wall framing ... still on the fence.

Pearl Jam - censored again

Tenclub.net
LOLLAPALOOZA WEBCAST: SPONSORED/CENSORED BY AT&T?

After concluding our Sunday night show at Lollapalooza, fans informed us that portions of that performance were missing and may have been censored by AT&T during the "Blue Room" Live Lollapalooza Webcast.

When asked about the missing performance, AT&T informed Lollapalooza that portions of the show were in fact missing from the webcast, and that their content monitor had made a mistake in cutting them.

During the performance of "Daughter" the following lyrics were sung to the tune of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall" but were cut from the webcast:

- "George Bush, leave this world alone." (the second time it was sung); and

- "George Bush find yourself another home."

This, of course, troubles us as artists but also as citizens concerned with the issue of censorship and the increasingly consolidated control of the media.

AT&T's actions strike at the heart of the public's concerns over the power that corporations have when it comes to determining what the public sees and hears through communications media.

Aspects of censorship, consolidation, and preferential treatment of the internet are now being debated under the umbrella of "NetNeutrality." Check out The Future of Music or Save the Internet for more information on this issue.

Most telecommunications companies oppose "net neutrality" and argue that the public can trust them not to censor..

Even the ex-head of AT&T, CEO Edward Whitacre, whose company sponsored our troubled webcast, stated just last March that fears his company and other big network providers would block traffic on their networks are overblown..

"Any provider that blocks access to content is inviting customers to find another provider." (Marguerite Reardon, Staff Writer, CNET News.com Published: March 21, 2006, 2:23 PM PST).

But what if there is only one provider from which to choose? If a company that is controlling a webcast is cutting out bits of our performance -not based on laws, but on their own preferences and interpretations - fans have little choice but to watch the censored version.

What happened to us this weekend was a wake up call, and it's about something much bigger than the censorship of a rock band.

The complete version of "Daughter" from the Lollapalooza performance is posted below for any of you who missed it. We apologize to our fans who were watching the webcast and got shortchanged. In the future, we will work even harder to ensure that our live broadcasts or webcasts are free from arbitrary edits.

AT&T: Pearl Jam edit a mistake
By MICHELLE ROBERTS

SAN ANTONIO — Lyrics performed by Pearl Jam criticizing President Bush should not have been censored from a webcast by AT&T Inc., a company spokesman acknowledged Thursday.

AT&T, through its Blue Room entertainment site, offered a webcast of the band's headlining performance Sunday at Lollapalooza in Chicago. The event was shown with a brief delay so the company could bleep out excessive profanity or nudity.

But monitors hired by AT&T through a vendor went further and cut two lines from a song to the tune of Pink Floyd's "Another Brick in the Wall." One was "George Bush, leave this world alone" the second time it was sung, and the other was "George Bush find yourself another home," according to the band's Web site.

AT&T spokesman Michael Coe said that the silencing was a mistake and that the company was working with the vendor that produces the webcasts to avoid future misunderstandings. He said AT&T was working to secure the rights to post the entire song — part of a singalong with the audience — on the Blue Room site.

Pearl Jam said in a posting on its Web site that in the future, it would work harder to ensure live broadcasts or webcasts are "free from arbitrary edits."

it's good to take breaks...

the bridge catastrophe is out of the news, 3 days only,
local friends share you can't get within 100' yet. still tragic.

barry bonds takes record, legitimate or not,
he can hit the ball much farther than I. but he cheated.

bad news of a friend today, her father is dying,
they're not at peace. why wait.

another from a job that will not rehire after leaving,
because the market gives them the liberty to. markets change.

and tonight is lucky night, record spinning night
it's overwhelming though, how do you sort 150 records!
i just bought another compilation, all great stuff.
a fair 85's to 95's pre indie compilation
some wacky ensembles of instrumentals
a whole michael jackson and morrissey vinyl collection
and a bunch of haight-ashbury albums.
you win some you lose some. but how you decide?
is it if you'd listen once again? or is the minimum 5 more times?
sell or keep? super fun though, new music, scratchy sounds.

I need to go get supplies today, just to get out of the house
dos dias es demasiado tiempo trabajando en tu casa!

the beach was the best break of them all.

"american crisis"

the Kenny house has taken new strides
thanks to the insights and push of parents
I couldn't be here without them, in many ways

and just the other night laying fairly exhausted in bed
which is still a futon and my summer sleeping bag
with a guatemalan hammock as my sheet, full of colors
I prioritize all the things that I haven't touched yet on the property
and was in awe how public buildings and facilities are maintained
an infinite amount of work.

tragedy hits minneapolis at rush hour, an interstate bridge crumbles
buses, semi-trailers, gasoline, commuters, walkers, boaters
all are took at 60 foot plunge into the mighty mississippi
tragic is a incomplete adjective

to settle the government-generated fear
homeland security announced it was not an act of terrorism
but of course with no absolute certainty, that would remove fear.

and now in today's headlines - a "national bridge crisis"
shocker.

engineers are looking at all the nations' bridges
next will be new congressional monies, bills, legislation
of course it's needed if we are to keep our pace
but should we?

yeah we need bridges with new load capacities for more traffic
but do we need new bridges for more traffic? where does it stop?
what about overpasses? dams? sewage and water facilities?
what about underground petroleum tanks? overhead water reservoirs?
what about buildings packed to critical mass with illegal immigrants?
what about...?

does it require another tragedy before we address all structures?
how does one government, one money-generating organization
how does it even keep up? I can't on the finite Kenny house!

are we in a "national bridge crisis"
or are we in an "american crisis"?
with desperate priorities, driven by "need".

I can voice what we "need" -
we "need" personal health responsibility and less insurance
we "need" to sacrifice profit from boxed shit and cultivate real food
we "need" less fear driven motivation and more good reasons
we "need" social responsibility and less dependency
we "need" to make sacrifice and let votes prioritize monies
we "need" to be flexible, give, embrace and support ourselves
regardless of race, color or creed

because we don't "need" another tragedy for attention
above all, we "need" real leadership

and I'm sorry, but now that we are defining tragedy
with 10 dead and a bridge replacement project
what about the 20 million in India to their hip in water?
